Gaston scratched his head. Two days had passed, and he’d yet to find Tiny. Fortunately, he was able to keep the men satisfied for the moment by paying them their share of the reward for bringing Humphrey in alive. They’d be content to squander their pay on whiskey and whores for the next several days, but after a week or when the money ran out, they’d be itching for a new quest. The fortunes of pirates could turn on a dime, but as long as Gaston kept the crew busy and their spirits high, he was able to retain his position as their captain.

He looked over at Frederica, who seemed to grow lovelier with each day. There was no denying her condition. He was assured she was carrying his child, no matter how much she tried to ignore the situation. Her face glowed like he’d never seen, and he appreciated the roundness that was beginning to develop around her abdomen and the fullness of her hips.

Today they’d assembled with the rest of Port Royal for the public hanging of Captain Humphrey. Rumor had it that he’d actually been done in by Hatch’s knife as there was speculation that he would be dead any moment from blood poisoning. But if Governor Whitehurst had anything to say about it, he wouldn’t let the man die before he had the chance to make an example of him to pirates who sailed without the governor’s permission. These days pirating was mostly sanctioned by the British government, ensuring that the crown received a percentage of whatever prize was captured.

The mood in the square was festive, and the smell of cooking from the vendors permeated the air. Someone played a lute in the background, and the English color guard was outfitted brilliantly in their crisp, clean uniforms. The rhythmic pounding of their drums filled the air with a dirge-like atmosphere that seemed fitting for such a procession.

Most people hadn’t bothered to dress for the occasion, but Frederica and Henrietta Whitehurst had decked themselves as if they were going to meet the queen. Gaston cut his eyes to Frederica’s cleavage, which spilled out the top of her gown more than usual. Yes, he was enjoying her pregnancy, even if she wasn’t.

He’d noticed an increase in amorous activity in their bedchamber as of late, another bonus to her pregnancy. The memory of Frederica and Sally from the night at the brothel crossed his mind and he briefly indulged himself by considering how tempting the two had been. His cock stiffened, and he was forced to rearrange his breeches to accommodate his erection.

“Gaston, do you smell that? Whatever it is smells delicious. Do you think you might be able to find something to eat as soon as this business is completed?” Frederica asked fervently.

“Anything for you, my pet,” he said. Her appetite was a dead giveaway, but he dared not mention it aloud.

The beating of the drums heralded the cart carrying the prisoner. It rolled jerkily through the streets, kicking up dust in its wake.
